Business Forum: Social Entrepreneurship

Posted by on March 20, 2011

The La Salle Center for Entrepreneurship will host its final event of the year on social entrepreneurship as part of Heritage Week on Thursday, March 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Dunleavy Room in the Student Union.

The essence of entrepreneurship is identifying one’s passion and knowledge about a subject and turning it into a mission and career.  The presentation will be valuable to students who are interested in capitalizing on their own interests or working to support others’ interests. The keynote speaker, Marci Schankweiler, will discuss her rewarding story about “For Pete’s Sake,” a cancer respite foundation that she founded (http://www.takeabreakfromcancer.org).

This presentation will focus on the events leading up to Marci’s decision to start this foundation and how she transitioned her idea into a successful enterprise. It will offer some advice to students who are interested in working with an organization like this or who are interested in starting their own venture in the future.  Marci’s experience of turning her passion into a career will be very relevant to many students.

Marci recently received the Signum Fidei Award from La Salle for her work and was also recognized as one of 30 “All Stars Among Us” during the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star game.

Our second speaker is David Gloss, investor and social entrepreneur currently engaged with Ryzing, an innovative new media software firm focused on raising funds for charitable organizations through social media and SmartPhone applications.  David’s mantra is “that it is possible to do good while doing well.” He has an interesting perspective on being financially successful while also meeting his personal commitments to altruistic goals.
