Background
The YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School is an education and job-training program for young adults who have dropped out of high school. Students in the program alternate six-week sessions between the classroom site, where they attend academic classes, and develop career-related, leadership and life skills, and the construction worksite where they develop real-world work skills while rebuilding abandoned houses for sale to first-time homebuyers. The School enrolls between 150 and 200 students each year and has been in operation for 12 years (chartered in 1997). Regular hours for this position are from 7:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.

Job Description
The Building Trades Instructor is required to perform the following duties:

Building Trades Responsibilities:
o Complete and submit all site related reporting (accident and incident reports, tool check lists, change orders, and back charge documentation)
o Provide oversight for one or more construction sites
o Schedule, implement, and assign tasks and timelines for construction tasks and projects
o Conduct and document safety meetings and inspections
o Interface with subcontractors and inspectors on-site
o Maintain responsibility for material needs of job site, as well as all tools and equipment for job site
o Maintain responsibility for production timelines and individual project deadlines

Instructional Responsibilities
o Create teaching materials, and reports – including – core competencies, lesson plans, curricula for all offered courses, monthly and data reports (student attendance, grade and cert reports, program calendar, etc.)
o Believe deeply in the mission and values of YBPCS
o Participate in the training and certification of students in NCCER Core Curricula (Safety, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Materials Handling, and Construction Drawing)
o Teach carpentry and related skills (including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, etc.) to YouthBuild Building Trades students
o Submit grades in a timely fashion according to established deadlines
o Create and maintain positive culture reflected in student engagement in program and classes.
o Monitor student attendance and work with students to meet attendance graduation requirement

o Hold high expectations for each student in the school

o Exhibit positive rapport with students
o Develop teamwork and leadership skills of students

Program Involvement:
o Participate in the School’s Mentoring Program
o Participate in one or more extra curricular activities—such as basketball, yearbook committee, prom committee.

Professional Development:
o Continue to develop skills through trainings and professional development offered at the school and outside
o Attend retreats, workshops, and conferences, as required.
o Attend weekly all staff and department meetings and other meetings as required by Directors of Vocational Programming and Business Development.

– Other duties as assigned by the Directors of Vocational Programming and Business Development.

Qualifications
YBPCS requires the following qualifications for this position:
– At least three years of professional construction experience working with all elements of housing construction.
– Good “finishing” skills and experience with project-based construction work.
– Experience managing work crews and construction sites
– Experience working in a team setting
– Strong communication skills
– Computer skills (Microsoft Word & Excel)
– Ability to adapt from construction environment to school environment.
– Excellent planning and communication skills
– Commitment to working enthusiastically with young-adult students

Preferred Skills:
• Teaching experience
• College degree, preferably in a related field
