NCBI’S IDEAS
Guilt, politeness, embarrassment, and lack of knowledge keep us from reaching out and really getting to know people who are different from ourselves.

Welcoming diversity requires taking risks and being willing to make mistakes and accept mistakes made by others.

Listening to other people’s stories can change hearts, attitudes, and behaviors.

We’re empowered when we learn to respond to oppressive jokes, comments & slurs in ways that shift attitudes.

Discrimination is serious but getting rid of it doesn’t have to be.

Every Person and Every Issue Counts!

WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Members of community groups, businesses, religious congregations, schools, and governmental organizations have all used NCBI ideas and skills to make these groups more inclusive and effective.

WHAT IS NCBI?
The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is an international non-profit organization. We are dedicated to ending the mistreatment of all groups. We train leaders in the skills of reducing prejudice, resolving conflicts between groups, and building coalitions.

NCBI aims to develop a new kind of leader: one who initiates diversity programs, takes principled stands, can enter the emotional heat of groups in conflict and build bridges, and one who models being an ally for all groups

NCBI Philadelphia is a community-based chapter of NCBI International. We serve as a resource to help our local communities and organizations face and resolve conflicts and establish prejudice reduction leadership teams. In addition to our public workshops, we work directly with organizations.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
In the one-day workshop, participants do a series of activities which build upon each other. The activities empower individuals of all ages and backgrounds to take leadership in building inclusive communities.

Participants have the opportunity:
* To celebrate similarities and differences,
* To recognize the misinformation that people have learned about various groups,
* To identify and heal from internalized oppression ? the discrimination members of an oppressed group target at themselves and each other,
* To claim pride in group identity,
* To understand the personal impact of discrimination through the telling of stories, and
* To learn hands-on tools for dealing effectively with oppressive comments and behavior.

The one-day workshop may stand alone, or it may serve – when followed with NCBI’s Train the Trainer Seminar – as the foundation for participating in or founding a leadership team to conduct similar prejudice reduction programs.
