Bright Futures: Improving Education and Transforming Outcomes for Girls of Color

Posted by Educational Testing Service on March 7, 2016

The “Bright Futures: Improving Education and Transforming Outcomes for Girls of Color” symposium will provide a forum to hear the voices, consider the struggles and examine the data of girls of color.

ETS and Rutgers University–Camden invite you to explore how discrimination, structural and institutional barriers, and disparities in education disproportionately affect girls of color. We encourage participants to attend the event with teams/key partners so that after the symposium, they can hit the ground running and commit their expertise to research and interventions over the course of a year in an effort to mitigate the challenges this population faces.

Space is limited, so please register by March 31 for this free event. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

When: Thursday, April 14, 6–8 p.m., and Friday, April 15, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Where: Rutgers University–Camden, 326 Penn Street, Camden, NJ 08102

Overview
Because our nation’s girls are graduating from high school at higher rates than boys, one could assume that they’re doing just fine. But, that’s not the reality for all girls. For girls of color, a different, more alarming narrative emerges. Data broken down by race and gender show that girls of color are, in fact, graduating at far lower rates than White girls and boys. And this disparity has pervasive educational and economic consequences that resonate for the rest of their lives.

The goal of the symposium is to begin to improve the economic and educational trajectory for our girls of color.

Who Should Attend
We want individuals or organizations who can help improve high school graduation and college completion rates among girls of color; fund research initiatives or identify innovative strategies; and provide support services to participate.

We look forward to seeing you in April!

Thank you,

ETS and Rutgers University–Camden
