Michael Johnston, a native of Colorado, moved to Mississippi after graduating from Yale College in 1997. Fascinated by the history and culture of the south since he was a child, he wanted to teach in Mississippi and Teach For America provided the perfect opportunity. The Deep Heart’s Core is the compelling story of Johnston’s years as a teacher and a citizen in Greenville, Mississippi. Its heartbreaking accounts carry you through the intimate struggles of students, families and community members who inhabit the poorest tracts of rural America. His trenchant observations about the racial struggles that persist in 21st century Mississippi take the reader back to a place and a problem that many have ignored since the painful days of Dr. King and the civil rights movement.
