Diversity Explosion: How New Racial Demographics Are Remaking America
by William H. Frey
This book describes the new racial demographic shifts in the US and their implications. The author draws on the recent US Census, census projections, and related sources to illustrate the following: how the US is in a pivotal period of shifts in its racial makeup, characterized by the rapid growth of Hispanics, Asians, and multiracial populations; the diminished growth and rapid aging of the white population; black economic advances and migration reversals from the North to the South; and a shift toward a nation in which no racial group is the majority. He details the broad change the US will experience as new minority growth spreads across the country as the white child population declines and the minority child population grows, as well as the evolving racial geography due to minority dispersal from Melting Pot states like New York to New Sun Belt states like Nevada. He provides demographic profiles of Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, and whites, and shows how stereotypes like white-only flight to the suburbs has changed, ghettoization is no longer true due to reductions in black-white segregation, multiracial marriages have risen, and the political power of minorities has grown.
