Bilingual Youth Organizer, Youth United for Change – Philadelphia

The Bilingual Youth Organizer will be responsible for organizing youth at two school-based chapters and other related responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish and English)
Agreement with YUC mission, philosophy and approach
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with good research skills
Ability to work under pressure and independently is a must!
Ability to work with school administrators and teachers
Experience working with inner-city youth
Experience or ready to work in a grassroots, multi-ethnic environment
Understanding of and experience with community organizing
Bachelors Degree in related field or at least 3 years experience in Youth/Community Organizing
Experience with group facilitation and popular education techniques in running and designing interactive workshops
Knowledgeable in areas of Social Media
Experience working with office technology (Ex. Microsoft Word, ETO, etc…)
Working knowledge of Philadelphia public education system
“Fire in the belly” for social justice
A lot of patience and a sense of humor!
Experience developing leadership of others
Flexible schedule for weekend and evening meetings, events or trainings a must!!

Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain YUC chapters in 2 area high schools
Recruit students by developing one-on-one relationships with them through ongoing meetings and contact with youth in the schools;
Develop and implement training to students involved in YUC chapters on an on-going basis
Attending and facilitating school based meetings of youth on a weekly basis at their schools.
Design and implement leadership development retreats for youth
Develop and implement classroom workshops in area high schools
Maintain contact with school personnel
Train youth in organizing skills:  critical and power analysis, planning and running meetings, public speaking, developing and implementing strategies for change;
Guide youth in picking issues, developing and carrying out issue campaigns, devising organizing strategies, preparing and implementing public “actions,” getting media coverage for events;
Attend weekly staff meetings;
Attend assigned conferences and staff development training;
Attendance at relevant coalition and school district meetings as needed
Ongoing and consistent communication with Executive Director and Office Manager
Submit written material to Executive Director in timely fashion, e.g. reports, data, evaluation forms, assessment forms

A plus:

Direct experience with Philadelphia public schools as a former student, teacher, or in some other capacity.

Campaign-based organizing experience

Knowledge in Graphic/Web design and related technologies and programs
