Bilingual Tassel Team Captain, Graduation Coach Campaign

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Graduation Coach Campaign is an initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Education that provides information, resources, and strategies to adults to help them guide students through school. In addition to workshops and digital resources, the Graduation Coach Campaign is undertaking a grassroots, face-to-face initiative in the Kensington area.
GCC is seeking reliable individuals to serve as its Tassel Team Captains in the Kensington area. Tassel Team Captains will oversee the street canvassing efforts of the GCC, interacting with residents, taking notes, and distributing printed materials about education. They may oversee volunteers at their sites. Once a month, Tassel Team Captains may also drop off materials at local businesses and organizations.
COMPENSATION: $13/hr
HOURS: Variable, likely 4-10 hours/month
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Arrive on time, every time, for canvassing sessions
• Provide a brief, on-site welcome and orientation to volunteers at their location
• Oversee the volunteers at their site throughout the canvassing session and help them feel supported and welcome
• Explain the mission of the Graduation Coach Campaign to community members
• Listen attentively to residents and document their concerns
• Answer residents’ questions when possible, and write down contact information for follow-up when applicable
• Document required information about the session on the provided forms
• Distribute printed materials to community businesses and organizations
• Tassel Team Captains may on occasion be required to pick up materials from City Hall
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Resident of the Kensington, North Philadelphia East, or Fairhill neighborhoods
• High school diploma OR active enrollment in GED classes
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• Passionate about education and the well-being of the community
• Able to always arrive for canvassing on time
• Flexible schedule (unless another Tassel Team Captain can fill in, no cancellations within 48 hours of a canvassing session)
• Comfortable approaching people and striking up a conversation
• Able to take good notes, write clearly, and submit paperwork in a timely fashion
• The ability to represent the Mayor’s Office in a neutral manner (not sharing your own opinions while working for the Graduation Coach Campaign)
• The ability to remain calm and pleasant when interacting with difficult people

The Graduation Coach Campaign will hold drop-in interviews at SKA Café (2418 Kensington Avenue) at the following times:
Tuesday, January 6th, 2-4 PM
Thursday, January 8th, 5-7 PM
Friday, January 16th, 2-4 PM
Be prepared to talk about your current schedule, why you are interested in the position, experience relevant to the job description, and to role-play in both English and Spanish. Please bring:
1. A copy of your high school diploma, GED, or proof of current enrollment in GED classes.
2. Proof of residency in the Kensington, North Philadelphia East, or Fairhill neighborhoods (any document that lists your name and address, such as a lease, state ID, utility bill, recent vehicle registration, etc.)
