Biden Administration Launches Initiative to Support Youth Mental Health

The Biden administration will launch the Youth Mental Health Corps this fall to address the growing youth mental health crisis in the U.S. The initiative will recruit and train young adults ages 18 to 24 to support their peers in navigating mental health issues, providing training and certification for work in schools, community organizations, and health clinics. Created by AmeriCorps, the Schultz Family Foundation, and other organizations, the program aims to fill gaps in mental health support in states with the least resources. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy emphasized the urgent need for the program, noting that youth mental health issues have been escalating for years, exacerbated by social media and the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative will initially launch in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, and Texas, with plans to expand to more states next year.
