Benefits/Housing Counselor
The Philadelphia Unemployment Project is hiring a Benefit/Housing Counselor. We are on the front lines of fighting to reduce foreclosures in the city and state and this is an opportunity to be involved in this fight.
This position focuses mainly on delinquency and default mortgage counseling to help families prevent the loss of their homes. Counselors will focus on preparing homeowners for applications for the state mortgage assistance program (HEMAP), assisting families work out repayment plans with mortgage lenders, negotiating HUD Loss Mitigation workouts for FHA homeowners, advising on bankruptcy and short term assistance programs.
The counselor will also work with staff organizers on the PUP Foreclosure Crisis Committee to reform programs relating to foreclosure. Mortgage foreclosures are currently at all time highs. You will get an opportunity to make real change in the way families are dealt with by the current environment.
The Benefits/Housing Counselor will also assist people with other programs for the unemployed such as Unemployment Compensation, including handling UC appeals, rental assistance, utility programs, food stamps, etc.
