The Puerto Rican Syndrome
On Tuesday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m., House of Our Own Bookstore, 3920 Spruce Street, will hold a reception for Patricia Gherovici, author of the new book, The Puerto Rican Syndrome.
In the 1950s, army medical officers designated symptoms that resembled hysteria among Puerto Rican soldiers reacting to stress as the “Puerto Rican Syndrome.” Patricia Gherovici examines this syndrome, and its implications for the growing Hispanic population of the United States, as a social, cultural, and political as well as psychiatric phenomenon.
Patricia Gherovici is an analyst in private practice and founding member and director of the Philadelphia Lacan Study Group and Seminar. She is the former director of a mental health clinic in North Philadelphia.
