Atlantic Region Service-Learning Conference
We are pleased to announce a call for proposal for the Atlantic Regional Service-Learning Conference, scheduled for October 28-29, 2004 at The Wyndham Franklin Plaza in Philadelphia, PA. This year?s conference theme is ?Service-Learning as a Vehicle for Community Change.? This exciting event is co-sponsored by the New York State Department of Education Service Learning Program, the New Jersey Learn and Serve America Program, the Pennsylvania Service Learning Alliance, the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning, the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development-PHENND and PennSERVE: The Governor’s Office of Citizen Service. Registration materials and more information about the conference will be sent out in March, 2004.
Many of the co-sponsors of this conference are non-profit, grass roots organizations that promote and support community/school-based service learning, civic engagement and volunteerism. We are dedicated to helping youth learn about themselves and their connection to others through community service, civic engagement, and leadership development. It is our goal to bring together youth, educators, and community partners to share exemplary programs, confront critical issues, explore new ideas, and network with others committed to service.
The conference theme expresses our belief that service learning is a vital tool that can be used as a vehicle for community change. We are seeking proposals for dynamic presentations that will directly connect service and civic education. Topics may include, but are not limited to: creative linkages with the curriculum; unique and successful collaborations with community partners; effective methods of reflection; diversity and civic education; leadership training through service; student initiated programs; and other critical issues in service learning, civic leadership, and community development.
Please note, PHENND is sponsoring a “Higher Ed” track at this conference. Proposals that address service-learning and other K-16 collaborations are highly encouraged. For more information about this track, please contact Hillary Aisenstein at hillarya@pobox.upenn.edu.
Submission Deadline: May 14, 2004 (please note, this is the second extension from the previously listed deadline).
