Celebrate “Sister Power” in Philadelphia with the Association of Black Women in Higher Education National Conference (ABWHE) as they honor Philadelphia’s Poet Laureate, author and activist Sonia Sanchez, with their inaugural Presidential Award at the Sonesta Hotel, Thursday, October 19th. The conference events/workshops will be held at the Sonesta Hotel and Temple University Center City Campus, Philadelphia.
This year’s theme is “Sister Power 2017: ‘Lift as We Climb’ – A Right, A Responsibility, A Privilege…,” where featured speakers include health advocate Rev. Lorina Marshall-Blake, and author Dr. Sara Willie-LeBretton. The conference will discuss topics such as career development, health and wellness, the historical impact of African American women in academia, social identity, leadership, and the increase of diversity in academia.
On Wednesday, October 18, the opening reception will be held at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, 701 Arch Street, where ABWHE will honor the service of African American Women Veterans in Higher Education, welcomed to Philadelphia by The Philadelphia Commission for Women and entertained by Philadelphia’s 1st Lady of Jazz & Soul; Sherry Butler.
