Saint Mary’s Nursery School (SMNS) is a child care center on the University of Pennsylvania campus in West Philadelphia. Established 61 years ago, we serve children ages 18 months to 5 years and provide aftercare for school-aged children 5 to 12. Though housed in a church building, we are a non-religious, secular organization. Our vibrant and diverse community is rooted in creativity, and we nurture young children through compassionate classroom management and a play-based, Reggio Emilia–inspired curriculum.

We are looking for a dedicated and passionate Assistant Teacher to join our early childhood education team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in child development and a genuine commitment to nurturing a stimulating, supportive environment for young learners.

Responsibilities:

  • Involvement in development of our current program
  • Communication with coworkers
  • Fun and easy going way with children
  • Capacity to work in a teaching team with other teachers and a team of specialists
  • Support teachers to develop activities that engage children’s interests and create a pleasing school environment
  • Model classroom agreements with the children
  • Provide friendly supportive structure and boundaries without being punitive
  • Possess an understanding of child development
