ASAP Scrabble Coordinator
Posted by After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP) on April 27, 2021
ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships was created in 2002 at the request of city leaders to bring public awareness to the dangers of the afternoon hours for unsupervised youth in Philadelphia. ASAP’s mission is to develop and support high-quality after school activities and resources to empower youth and strengthen communities in Philadelphia. ASAP works with schools, libraries, and community sites to serve more than 4,000 youth (K-12) annually through the following citywide initiatives: ASAP Chess, ASAP Debate, ASAP Drama, and ASAP Scrabble. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ASAP has adapted its programs to virtual platforms in order to continue to engage students, support their social-emotional well-being, and keep them connected to their school communities.
ASAP Scrabble celebrates teamwork and inspires joy for wordplay. With more than 1,100 students playing in 85 clubs, ASAP Scrabble is the largest program of its kind in the country. A great complement to classroom learning, Scrabble reinforces students’ reading, vocabulary, dictionary and math skills, while also teaching important lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship. Through weekly play, citywide tournaments and family-friendly events, ASAP Scrabble fosters a community of young wordsmiths eager to test their skills alongside like-minded peers. From October through February, ASAP runs the Philadelphia Scholastic Scrabble League with more than 130 students from Philadelphia public and charter schools competing in monthly tournaments.
The Scrabble Coordinator will work alongside the Scrabble Manager to support the expansion of ASAP Scrabble and provide more opportunities for children throughout Philadelphia to engage in friendly, competitive Scrabble play. This includes building new school partnerships, recruiting and training adult Scrabble club leaders, and fostering a sense of community among the Philadelphia Scrabble community.
