Dana Foundation Announces Arts Education Rural Initiative
Deadline: June 15, 2006 (Letters of Intent)

Through its arts education grants program, the Dana Foundation (<a href="http://www.dana.org/">http://www.dana.org/</a>) supports innovative professional development programs leading to improved teaching of the performing arts in public schools. Beginning in 2007, the foundation will award grants to professional development programs in rural communities in the United States.

The Dana Foundation is interested primarily in training for professional artists teaching performing arts in public schools, and in-school arts specialists who teach performing arts in the public schools. In-school arts specialists are teachers who are part of the permanent school staff (full- or part-time) and who teach the performing arts as their primary area of instruction.

The foundation’s interests include but are not limited to the following: dance, music, or theater based on a specific pedagogy; and arts curricula integrated into a school’s standard curriculum.

Dana offers one- and two-year grants, with the timeline to be determined by mutual agreement. Grants vary in size, with the largest award being $50,000. No grants are awarded directly to individuals. Dana does not award grants to individual schools or school districts.

Eligible candidates interested in requesting an arts education grant from the foundation are required to first submit a Letter of Intent online.

Projects funded in the next round of awards may not begin prior to January 1, 2007, when the 2007 awards will be announced. Letters of Intent may be submitted at any time, but grants are awarded once a year, in December. The deadline for submission of Letters of Intent for the 2007 round of grants is June 15, 2006. Letters of Intent received after June 15 will be considered for the 2008 grants cycle.
