Job Title: AmeriCorps Member – Arab Community Liaison/Case Aide
Reports to: Refugee Resettlement Manager at Nationalities Service Center in Philadelphia and Associate Director/AmeriCorps Supervisor at Philadelphia Arab-American CDC
Hours per year: 1,700 (33 hrs/week on average for an 11 month service period
Total Compensation: $11,100, plus educational grant in the amount of $5,350
Starting Date: January 2011
Ending Date: January 2012
REQUIREMENTS
Successful candidate will have a keen interest in serving Philadelphia’s Iraqi refugee communities and will support community members as they move toward healthy integration. She/he will learn to navigate complex public benefits and health systems and will have the maturity to understand that resources are often either insufficient or not as recipients would want. The position requires flexibility and the ability to problem solve. Fluent spoken Arabic/English required, along with competent literacy in both languages.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Newly Arriving Refugees:
• AmeriCorps Member will work to support Case Managers in the delivery services as outlined by the funders and based on each client’s needs.
• Member will assist Iraqi refugees at the conclusion of the NSC’s funded service period.
• Member will support the work of NSC by promoting messages as put forth by the Director of Social Services.
• Member will work in concert with AmeriCorps member who is housed at Arab American CDC (AACDC) to coordinate home visits with every newly arrived family to ensure a warm welcome and to introduce families to services provided by both NSC and AACDC.
• Member is interpret Arabic/English
Provide Cultural Orientation:
• AmeriCorps member will work with volunteers and student interns to implement cultural orientation programming. The member will work with newly arrived refugees who will be attending cultural orientation sessions and will utilize a basic curriculum. The member will be responsible for developing lesson plans, working with refugee participants, and aid in evaluating the program.
Organize Culturally Appropriate Events:
• The AmeriCorps Member will coordinate a minimum of four cultural/social events to bring refugee communities together (i.e. picnics, field trips and educational forums).
• Member will be responsible for developing and distributing four newsletters to share relevant information with Philadelphia’s Iraqi refugee communities.
• Member will participate and help organize an event for annual National Arab-American Service Day in May 2011.
