AmeriCorps*VISTA, Project SHINE

Center for Intergenerational Learning seeks Americorps*VISTA Volunteers:

Project SHINE?s service-learning program, which connects college students with older immigrants for mutual teaching and learning, is seeking an AmeriCorps*VISTA to coordinate, implement, and market the Health Literacy Initiative, a program that promotes awareness and understanding of health communication needs of immigrants through ESL health lesson plans and health-related programming. The VISTA will also research demographics of immigrant elders locally and nationally, and work to develop funding opportunities for SHINE?s local and national programs.

AmeriCorps* VISTA Members will engage in the following tasks and activities:

 Work with project staff to organize special events for Project SHINE
 Develop marketing and public relations materials for the local, national, and health literacy programs
 Conduct research into the health literacy needs of elder immigrants and refugees
 Maintain the database and assist with dissemination of the Health Literacy Publication
 Research funding opportunities for Project SHINE?s local and national programs
 Compile reporting information and draft components of reports to funders
 Design tracking mechanisms for reporting and evaluation received from consortium members participating in the Health Literacy Initiative
 Develop content for Project SHINE?s national and local program websites

AmeriCorps* VISTA Members will need to possess the following skills and qualifications:

– Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills
– Bachelors degree
– Experience working in urban and culturally diverse communities
– Experience in public speaking and community outreach
– Strong interest and commitment to literacy, citizenship, immigration, community and aging issues
– Bilingual skills preferred (especially Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese, and Spanish)
– Experience tutoring adults, especially related to ESL and literacy, preferred

Term of service: The term of service for this AmeriCorps*VISTA position is early August 2006 through the end of July 2007. Deadline to apply is June 30.
