UCCP POWER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM COORDINATOR
AN AMERICORPS POSITION
The University Community Collaborative of Philadelphia (UCCP) at Temple University is seeking an AmeriCorps Member to coordinate its POWER Internship, a credit bearing opportunity for high school juniors and seniors that integrates exposure to nonprofit work environments with a deepening of civic commitment and social inquiry and a broadening of research, media literacy and technological skills. Through project based learning, interns address issues that have community/social justice implications while also developing leadership skills. Programming is conducted on Temple’s campus. The UCCP has partnered with over 20 high schools in Philadelphia through this program.
The UCCP “prepares and supports youth and young adults to become confident, effective leaders and collaborates with organizations to create cultures that value and integrate the contributions of youth, thereby building stronger communities.” The POWER Internship is part of its Progressive Youth Leadership Development Continuum, a series of afterschool and summer programs, credit bearing internships, peer education activities and paid employment designed to provide youth and young adults with the skills, knowledge and wherewithal to assume leadership positions within their schools, communities and the larger society.
Coordinating the POWER Internship involves the following Responsibilities:
• Strengthen current partnerships with Philadelphia schools, and foster new ones, for the purpose of recruiting high school student interns
• Coordinate student recruitment and application processes
• Monitor, and adapt as appropriate, the POWER Internship curriculum
• Train college student Internship facilitators and provide on-going support and feedback
• Coordinate campus and community resources necessary to support internship activities
• Maintain participant and program records and track intern progress
• Develop and track project budgets
• Serve as a liaison between the school, the interns and the college student Internship Facilitators
Minimum Requirements for this position include:
• Bachelors’ degree required (Education, Public Policy or Social Science degree preferred).
• Experience in program development and project management
• Experience in curriculum development and implementation
• Ability and willingness to travel to Philadelphia schools and community organizations
• Experience with and/or willingness to learn database management, recording and tracking of data
• Strong oral and written presentation skills
• Commitment to collaboration and problem solving
• Passion for youth development and social justice issues
• Experience working with youth and young adults
• Sense of humor and appreciation for cold pizza are highly encouraged
The term of service for this AmeriCorps position is September 1, 2011 through August 31, 2012 Compensation is a living allowance of approx. $15,000 plus an education award of $5,350. Health insurance is also available.
