Job Description for Americorps Position
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
Tree Vitalize One Million Campaign
September 16, 2010

The Americorps Member will work with the PHS TreeVitalize One Million (TOM) Team to help plan, launch and implement our campaign to restore the regional tree canopy by planting one million trees by the year 2020. Specific responsibilities include:

•    Assisting with and eventually leading Tree Tenders trainings that prepare citizens to plan community tree planting events and teach basic tree care and maintenance;
•    Leading programs for children and youth on the importance of trees in built and natural landscapes;
•    Helping the TOM team identify, assess and prepare sites for tree planting;
•    Helping to develop GIS maps with information about the tree canopy by community or neighborhood, including location, tree health and vitality, water sources, public amenities, and other items of concern;
•    Assisting in other aspects of the TOM campaign as assigned.

Experience in some or all of the following areas preferred:
•    Community-based education and training
•    Community outreach and organizing
•    Curriculum and materials development
•    Youth program development, management or leadership
•    Community surveys
•    GIS mapping
•    Community forestry or environmental education

Qualifications:
•    Must have a valid driver’s license
•    Must be able to work as a member of a team
•    Must be flexible and willing to take initiative
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills
•    Ability to work well with diverse communities
•    Proficiency with computer basics (Word, Excel, and Internet research.)
•    College degree or comparable experience working in community education
