American Association of Diabetes Educators Annual Meeting

There is no better place than Philadelphia for the American Association of Diabetes Educators to hold its Annual Meeting & Exhibition. The city where America’s founding fathers framed the constitution is a testament to attaining all that is possible, and the AADE13 program is built around the theme “The Point of Possible.” Endless possibilities await in this historic city during AADE’s Annual Meeting Aug. 7-10.

“We’re focusing on what is possible in our roles as diabetes educators in terms of new technologies, relationship opportunities and all we can realize as the point of possible,” said Tami Ross, RD, LD, CDE, AADE president.

Patti Geil, MS, RD, FADA, CDE, Annual Meeting program planning chair, said planners developed clear-cut goals to help participants “be the best they can possibly be for their patients”:

To prepare diabetes educators to survive and thrive in today’s evolving healthcare environment
To highlight the latest technology and innovations in the field of diabetes
To encourage attendees to expand their relationships with those that provide and support diabetes education

AADE13 is filled with engaging and educational general sessions, breakout sessions, workshops, poster sessions, late-breaking sessions and pre-meeting courses. The program offers 23 continuing education credit hours, which are built into in five learning tracks:

Program and business management
Pathophysiology, epidemiology and clinical guidelines
Self-management education
Teaching and learning skills
Culturally competent supportive care across the lifespan

Attendees can look to five expertise categories — novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert — to guide learning.

Beyond CE, AADE13 offers attendees something less quantifiable, but invaluable.

“A lot of our members come to this meeting to not only get CE, but also to network, connect with colleagues and meet new friends,” said Ross, diabetes and nutrition educator at Internal Medicine Associates and owner of Ross Nutrition Resources in Lexington, Ky.

The exhibit hall is a stop Ross always makes, especially during unopposed hours when no other sessions are taking place. While Geil sets about each year to methodically peruse the exhibit, she does diverge from her plan.

“When I see a group gathered, I go where the action is. The exhibit hall is where you can see the most recent advances,” said Geil, owner of Geil Nutrition Communications, in Lexington, Ky.
