Afterschool program volunteers needed
Posted by on February 6, 2004
Christ Church is in the midst of its fourth year of teaming up with St. John the Evangelist Church at 3rd and Reed Streets, and providing one-to-one tutoring in a safe, positive environment to 2nd and 3rd grade students on the cusp of failing at school. Most of the children enrolled in the program do not get the attention they need at school or at home ? and their emotional and academic development reflects this. Through this after-school program, these children establish positive relationships with trained adult mentors who are able to work with these young children to foster self-confidence, academic advancement, and solid peer relationships.
Volunteers are needed to:
*Develop relationships with and tutor 2nd and 3rd grade students from Abigail Vare Elementary School. These children are at a critical age when values are formed, self-esteem developed, and academic and problem solving skills acquired.
*Provide children with emotional support and help them with reading and math skills.
The Program meets Monday ? Thursday from 3:15 ? 5:30 at St John the Evangelist (3rd and Reed Streets in South Philadelphia). We ask that mentors commit to one day a week so that they might have adequate time to get to know the students and build solid relationships.
