The Urban Nutrition Initiative (UNI) high school internship program involves 9th-12th grade students from West Philadelphia high schools in organizing better food choices for their community. The program supports academic performance and leadership development through service learning, tutoring and related field trips and activities.

The Afterschool Academic Support Instructor will lead 9 hours per week of structured academic support activities for approximately 20-25 students per seminar. Topics will include developing positive study habits, subject specific instruction and college and career preparation activities. Undergraduate volunteers from the University of Pennsylvania will be present to support the seminars. This position will work closely with other UNI staff members and school teachers to ensure the academic development of UNI high school interns.

Instructors will be paid for 12 hours per week which will include 9 hours per week of instruction plus 3 hours of planning time. We anticipate the program will run approximately 30 weeks/school year, 3 evenings per week: Mondays at University City High School from 2:45-5:45, Tuesdays at Sayre High School from 2:45-5:45 and Wednesdays alternating b/w Bartrams High School (2:45-4:30) and High School of the Future (4:00-6:45). Planning time will occur at our offices on either Thursdays or Fridays hours TBD.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Teaching experience in an urban high school setting is required
Access to a car or knowledge of SEPTA
Extremely organized and detail focused
Ability to work independently

Opportunities for summer employment may be available for July and August 2012.
