Mayor Announces ASAP Directory Release
On September 14, Mayor Michael Nutter announced the release of ASAP’s annual after school directory in a press conference held at City Hall. ASAP’s annual After School Activities Directory contains information on after school enrichment programs offered throughout the city organized by zip code. At the event, Nutter spoke about the importance of keeping Philadelphia’s youth involved after school, citing academic as well as social benefits. He was joined at the podium by ASAP president Marciene Mattleman, who also highlighted the vital role of after school programs in keeping youth out of trouble. “When young people who were a part of the flash mobs were asked why they were involved in this anti-social activity, they said it was because they had noting to do.” The release of the directory offers Philadelphia youth over 1,000 answers to the problem of “nothing to do.”
Published as a supplement to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Directory includes information on more than 1,000 after school programs in Philadelphia organized by zip code and is updated monthly on ASAP’s website. Copies may be requested at mbright@phillyasap.org.
