Prepares and facilitates professional training for volunteers who contact the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy and/or are recruited by our partners to support adult literacy learners city-wide.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The trainer receives general direction and supervision from the Mayor’s Commission Volunteer and Tutor Training Coordinator and the Director of Adult Literacy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS–Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Provides volunteer tutors with strategies and resources to use when working with adult learners who are enrolled in basic literacy programs, are preparing to pass the GED exam and/or are working on improving their English language skills
• Facilitates face-to-face training sessions for potential volunteer tutors
• Monitors trainees’ enrollment in and completion of the online component of the tutor training including:
➢ responding to trainees’ online posts
➢ providing encouragement and support as these trainees progress through the course
➢ occasionally stimulating discussion to maintain trainees’ engagement
➢ contacting trainees who are falling behind in the course
• Compiles and submit training reports that summarizes the number of attendees, activities undertaken during the face-to-face and online training, and provide recommendations

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in education , social science or a closely related filed
• Knowledge of and experience with adult education or with the learner population for adult literacy
• Understanding of adult learning principles and their implementation in adult basic andliteracy education
• Experience teaching and/or tutoring both in face-to-face and online settings
• Experience teaching ESL and/or GED prep. courses
• Very comfortable with new technologies and how they can be integrated in learning
• ability to motivate learners
• Ability and willingness to facilitate, as needed, tutor training sessions in different city neighborhoods.
