Youth Empowerment Services (YES) is an innovative Philadelphia-based non-profit company that provides educational and workforce readiness opportunities to youth between the ages of 17-21 who have dropped out of school. The academic Teacher Assistant position is a year round, part-time position at $15 per hour. The teacher assistant’s hours include classroom instruction, prep time and record-keeping. They will be set in advance per agreement and fit within YES’ daily instructional schedule, Monday through Friday from 9:15 AM – 3:40 PM.
The Academic Teacher Assistant works directly with YES academic instructors with supervision and guidance from the YES Lead Teacher, and from the Program and Education directors.
Responsibilities: S/he is responsible for:
• Providing one-on-one and small group instruction in pre-assigned designated classes (primarily mathematics) using instructional resources provided by the YES academic instructional team; conduct individual student conferencing and record progress as appropriate; write and maintain brief student progress reports on periodic (weekly) basis.
• Assisting the academic instructor in the classroom when needed with classroom administrative matters — record attendance, make copies, preparing instructional visual aids, locate supplementary instructional resources as appropriate, etc.
• Working with the YES instructor, help “flesh out” daily lesson plans; establish and track student learning goals (using the SDP), and assist team on broader curriculum development – selection of relevant readings/activities online, brainstorm class projects, etc.
• Teaching and/or covering classes on your own (in emergency situations and as experience dictates) using lesson plans prepared in advance by the academic instructor.
• Managing an independent study instructional setting for students who are nearing completion of the remaining sections of their GED test preparation
• Attending academic team meetings and professional development sessions as required; attend YES all staff professional development, if available and appropriate.
General Job Qualifications:
• Commitment to the values, mission and goals of the organization, demonstrated through strong personal conviction and prior positive experience working with the student population.
• Prior experience tutoring in the designated subject area classes, especially mathematics, from pre-GED to GED and college-ready levels.
• High degree of energy, flexibility, initiative and creativity.
• Ability to implement interactive curriculum activities that attract, engage and develop youth.
• Strong written, oral and organizational skills.
• Experience working with young adults in an urban setting.
• Proficient with basic computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Additional Qualifications:
Requirements for the position: Clearances including: PA Child Abuse, FBI Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprint Check. YES will assist in obtaining these clearances.
