THE PETER C. MURRELL JR., MEMORIAL SYMPOSIUM ON URBAN EDUCATION

ACTS in partnership with Loyola University, are pleased to announce The Peter C. Murrell, Jr., Memorial Symposium on Urban Education- A Culture of Caring: Transformational approaches to urban schooling, which will be held on October 6th to celebrate a dear friend and colleague. The Symposium will bring together higher ed, educators, community members and youth activists to challenge old notions of school organization and instruction and present new and important ways of creating relationships and refining practices. The morning will be devoted to the concept of the “Community Teacher,” introduced by Dr. Murrell in 2001. We will focus on the preparation and development of teachers – looking at ways in which higher ed can authentically engage with communities to in order to train culturally competent and connected educators. In the afternoon, we will unpack the concept of “educational resiliency” developed by ACTS under Dr. Murrell’s leadership – exploring issues of climate, behavior support, and personal growth that are at the core of excellence in education and seeking ways to cultivate trauma-informed, caring communities in urban schools and focuses our practice on the development of successful identity, agency and capacity for reflection in our children and youth. From the generosity of Loyola’s School of Education, the symposium, including all food and materials, is free and open to the public. Registration is required and limited, so act now!
