A Compact Guide for Broadening Participation in STEM

Posted by University of Pennsylvania on July 23, 2018

We thought you would be interested in the new brochure on “Shared Accountability and Higher Education: A Compact Guide for Broadening Participation in STEM.” This brochure is one of several products that resulted from a workshop grant from NSF on “Assessing Performance and Developing an Accountability System for Broadening Participation,” for which Ira Harkavy, Associate Vice President and Founding Director of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania served as Principal Investigator and Louis Martin-Vega, Dean of Engineering at North Carolina State University, served as Co-Principal Investigator.

Among the other products are:

–A widely disseminated report, “Better STEM Outcomes: Developing an Accountability System for Broadening Participation,” (March 2017) that summarizes the proceedings of that workshop. The report also helped inform the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE)’s 2015-2016 Biennial Report to Congress. (Ira recently completed his term as Chair of CEOSE, a federally mandated committee that advises NSF on broadening participation for underrepresented minorities, women, and people with disabilities.)

–An article entitled “A New Accountability for Broadening Participation in STEM” (May 2017), written at the request of the American Council on Education for their Higher Education Today blog.

–A report summarizing that meeting’s findings, “Assessing Performance and Developing an Accountability System for Broadening Participation: The Role of Higher Education” (October 2017).
