Audioconference to Help Cities Engage Volunteers in Local Service Efforts

On Thursday, April 22, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, the YEF Institute and HandsOn Network will co-host a free, hour-long audioconference on “A Call to Service: City Leadership for Local Volunteerism.”

Following the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and President Obama’s national call to service, many cities are stepping up their efforts to tap volunteers in addressing local needs and building stronger communities.  Especially in this time of economic and fiscal strain, volunteers can supplement the efforts of local governments to maintain and enhance vital city services.  Recognizing this potential, the Cities of Service Coalition launched a national campaign to support local volunteerism and promote service-oriented collaboration among city governments, nonprofits and universities.  As part of the Cities of Service Collaborative team, HandsOn Network is working across its network to support this initiative from the ground up.

Speakers on this call will discuss strategies for engaging residents in city-led volunteer initiatives, from issuing a “call to action” and building partnerships, to helping volunteers support “homegrown” community development projects.   While the call is free, it is only available to a limited number of participants.  Advance registration is required by close of business Tues., April 20.  No phone registrations can be accepted.  One day prior to the call, each registrant will receive an email providing a toll-free, dial-in number to use in joining the audioconference.  For questions about the YEF Institute’s audioconference series, contact Michael Karpman at (202) 626-3072 or [email protected].
