4th Annual Service Learning & the Arts Conference

Florida Learn & Serve, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and California College of The Arts: Center for Art and Public Life are pleased to announce the 4th Annual Service Learning & the Arts Conference to be held on March 30-April 1 in beautiful Miami, Florida. This year’s conference will focus on community development through service-learning and art projects. This conference is once again targeted towards K-12 art teachers/administrators AND higher education art faculty/administrators with a special emphasis on community partners. Here are some of the conference activities:

Opening Reception at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens – March 30, 2006
Join us for the opening reception and dinner on Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at a national historic landmark and the home – turned museum – of one of America’s wealthiest industrialist, James Deering. The extraordinary European-inspired estate includes a house filled with art and furnishings surrounded by ten acres of gardens on Biscayne Bay. The conference will offer:
– Service-learning and arts workshops ranging from Introductory sessions to advanced Issues
– K-HE “Best Practice” presentations on service-learning and arts programs
– Workshops/presentations on working with the community
– Poster session

Closing Session – April 1, 2006
Saturday’s half-day closing session is held at ArtSouth
(http://www.artsouthhomestead.org) in Homestead, FL. ArtSouth, a not-for-profit artist’s community sits on a 3 1/2 acre campus that includes a two-story Fine Arts and a three-story Fine Crafts and Sculpture building. ArtSouth provides affordable working, living, learning, teaching, exhibiting, and sales space for juried, emerging, and established artists in a location that will dramatically benefit from their presence. Resident artists, along with service-learning art students, will host an engaging morning of interactive art production with participants. Roundtrip transportation to ArtSouth is provided.

Fee/Scholarships
Registration is only $100 and the conference website will be available in mid-October. Limited travel scholarships are available by submitting an application. For K-12, travel scholarships are only offered to Florida teachers/administrators. For higher education, any faculty/administrator throughout the country may apply.
