3rd Annual Sojourner Truth Walk: Celebrating Girls’ and Women’s Leadership
Register today! Walk in honor of a Woman or Girl you admire.
The 3rd Annual Sojourner Truth Walk on Saturday, May 2 is a 5K walkathon event in West Philadelphia to celebrate the leadership of women and girls and support the work of Camp Sojourner, Girls’ Leadership Camp. The event is named in honor of Sojourner Truth, the escaped slave, abolitionist, and women’s rights activist. Walkers are encouraged to walk in honor of a woman or girl they admire, and make a sign or carry a picture. This year’s walk will also feature a female activist history timeline, from Sojourner Truth to the present, displayed along the 5K route. Activists who will be featured include Ida B. Wells, Ella Baker, Dolores Huerta, and Philadelphia’s own Gloria Casarez.
Registration starts at 9:30am in Clark Park. Walk warm-up will start at 10:30am and walk itself will start promptly at 11am, circling Clark Park, Kingsessing Park, and Malcolm X Park, and ending at the Calvary Center (48th and Baltimore). The finish-line celebration will feature music and speakers, including Unidos da Filadelfia and City Council Candidate Helen Gym, along with youth activist voices.
This is a family-friendly event–all are welcome! Register online at http://www.wizathon.con/sojourner-truth-walk.
Camp Sojourner, Girls’ Leadership Camp, is a nonprofit leadership development program for Philadelphia girls, which offers year-round leadership workshops, service projects, and arts programming along with a week-long overnight summer camp — all on a low-cost, sliding scale for families.
