ABOUT THE MAYORS DAY OF RECOGNITION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE:
National Service is vital to Philadelphia. Every year, thousands of AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers dedicate themselves to stemming the drop-out crisis, engaging at-risk youth, enhancing environmental sustainability, catalyzing community revitalization, and much more. In 2012, as President of the United States Conference of Mayors, Mayor Michael A. Nutter called on his fellow mayors to publicly recognize the impact national service members make in their cities. Working in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, the National League of Cities, and Cities of Service, Mayor Nutter established the first annual Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service. On April 7th of this year, 1,600 mayor’s and country officials from around the country will celebrate this important annual event.
