Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education’s

36th Annual Summer Institute on College Teaching

Over the years, hundreds of faculty have participated in the Institute and have found it very worthwhile and rewarding. The Institute is unique in that it allows faculty members the opportunity to discuss college teaching and learning in-depth with their colleagues in an open, pleasant environment. Since enrollment in the Institute is limited, there is ample time for one-on-one discussion with the other faculty.

The Virginia Tidewater Consortium’s Summer Institute on College Teaching is in its 36th year of helping faculty at every level and discipline to become more effective teachers.

Although the Institute is intensive in that there are morning, afternoon and some evening sessions, the experience is most enjoyable since such a wide array of topics are discussed.  Participating faculty often become quite involved in the topics, and all who attend are required to design an action plan for their next semester of teaching based on one or more of the topics addressed during the Institute.  One of the important aspects of the Summer Institute is the emphasis on the practical application of what is learned.  The Summer Institute is specifically designed to have an impact on the teaching and learning process, and hopefully have a long-term positive effect on the faculty member.

What participants have to say….

It was a very intensive week that helped rejuvenate my enthusiasm for teaching….

Overall the Institute has been very helpful to me.  It has provided me with a wealth of ideas and material to use in my own teaching situation.  I would definitely recommend it…

The Institute sparked my imagination to think of different ways of teaching.  It was a lot of work, but it was worth it…
