Major volunteer recruitment event set for 9/11
As the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedy approaches, efforts continue to establish a new tradition of observe the anniversary as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Last year, Global Citizen, Mayor Michael Nutter, and the City of Philadelphia hosted a successful first volunteer fair at City Hall, bringing together citizens to learn how local community organizations are making a difference and how to sign up to volunteer and help make a lasting impact on the lives of other Philadelphians.
One year later, Philadelphia has become a member of Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of more than 100 mayors who have signed a Declaration of Service, committing to work together to lead a multi-year effort to expand volunteer service.

Further, Philadelphia is one of 20 Cities across the country to receive the Cities of Service Leadership Award which has enabled Mayor Nutter to appoint a Chief Service Officer and to create the Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service.
Mayor Nutter and dozens of dedicated community organizations will participate in the 2nd annual Citywide Civic Engagement Expo on Wednesday, September 8th, 10:30am to 2pm at City Hall’s Dilworth Plaza.
Organizations seeking volunteers are asked to join in supporting the Mayor’s call to service by hosting an information table to show ongoing volunteer opportunities at their organizations.
The event will include a noon public ceremony featuring Mayor Nutter, who will kick off the City’s call to ongoing civic engagement and committed volunteer service. Following the news conference, the mayor will spend time greeting the organizations and volunteers that make Philadelphia a great place to live, work, play and learn.
Last year, organizations that participated in the volunteer fair recruited over 400 volunteers.
Register for a free table online here. [Note: to participate, an organization must offer ongoing volunteer opportunities.] Table space is limited and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
