26th Annual Celebration of Black Writing Festival
“Movement: Paying it Forward”
May 19-29, 2010
The Celebration’s theme “Movement: Paying it Forward,”honors the many recent and upcoming civil rights anniversaries. Art Sanctuary will look at the accomplishments of the movement–and the way contemporary writing continues to advance the Movement’s unflinching social justice agenda. This will be explored this year through writing about sports, sci-fi, fiction, children’s work, illustration, journalism, and film.
The purpose of the Celebration of Black Writing is to deepen our city’s literary life and polish its tourist shine with a rich infusion of African-American writers in all genres during the week of Memorial Day. Writers discuss their work with up to 1,500-2,000 students, and another 2,000-3,000 people participate in panels, workshops, the basketball tournament, teachers’ symposium, Family Pavilion, main stage, and other events. Come and join us and bring the whole family!
