About The Philanthropy Outlook

The Philanthropy Outlook predicts changes in year-to-year growth rates for philanthropic giving for the years 2015 and 2016, including overall U.S. giving and giving by individuals/households, foundations, estates and corporations. Each forecast is provided with a contextual analysis that adds dimension to our understanding of the many factors that are likely to affect giving.

Why The Philanthropy Outlook Matters

Nonprofit organizations impact us every day, whether through providing access to education, health services or the arts or through the innumerable ways in which the mission and vision of these organizations touch the lives of communities around the world. Philanthropic giving is critical to the sustainability — and ultimately critical to the impact — these nonprofits can have.

Philanthropic giving is also an essential component of the U.S. and world economy. As reported by the Giving USA 2014 Annual Report, total charitable contributions in 2013 amounted to an estimated $335.17 billion—or 2 percent of U.S. Gross Domestic Product. In turn, more than 1.4 million U.S. nonprofits—among which two-thirds are 501(c)3 charities—generate nearly a trillion dollars each year for the U.S. economy.

Adding The Philanthropy Outlook to the existing body of research, such as the long-standing Giving USA Annual report, allows us to further our understanding of the factors at play in philanthropic giving. Forward-looking predictions along with historical data will inspire new conversations that can inform decisions and enhance our collective ability to grow philanthropic giving in the U.S.
