American Water Accepting Applications for 2012 Environmental Grant Program

American Water Works Company, Inc., a water and wastewater utility company, has announced that applications are being accepted by its participating state subsidiaries for the company’s 2012 Environmental Grant Program awards. Grants will be available in American Water service areas in ten states — California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
The program provides funds for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore, or protect the watersheds, surface water, and/or groundwater supplies through partnerships.
To be eligible for funding, proposed projects must address a source water or watershed protection need in the community; be completed between May 1, 2012, and November 30, 2012; be a new or innovative program for the community, or serve as a significant expansion to an existing program; be carried out by a formal or informal partnership between two or more organizations; provide evidence of sustainability (continued existence after the American Water grant monies are utilized); and be located within an American Water service areas in one of the eligible states.
In 2011, a total of thirty-five projects in American Water’s service areas in eight states were awarded grants totaling more than $155,600.
