2011 Summer Course Development Institute
Monday, May 23, 2011 and Tuesday, May 24, 2011

8.30 am – 3:30pm (each day)
Institute Description: The SPRING Course Development Institute will offer a small cohort of 15 faculty members from throughout the region the opportunity to work intensively on redesigning a course with the guidance of faculty-development and service-learning professionals.
Targeted Audience: Any faculty who are interested in designing, or redesigning a course to include a service-learning component.
Cost: $150 for the 2 days of training (Includes breakfast, lunch & materials) – Some scholarships may be available, please inquire.
Schedule & Topics
Day One
Mon. May 23
8:30 am – 3:30 pm
Faculty participants will work on the design of their specific course(s). Each faculty member either brings an existing course curriculum or an outline of a new course.
* Basics of service-learning methodology.
* Shaping learning goals that are addressed through service-learning experiences.
* Creating reflective assignments.
* Assessing student learning that occurs in service-learning.
* Q & A session with faculty experienced in service-learning.
Day Two
Tues. May 24
8:30 am – 3:30 pm
Faculty participants will focus on their community partnership and service-learning course project. The training will walk faculty through how to effectively partner with a community member so both benefit. Support for finding a community partner organization or project will also be facilitated.
* Cultivating quality community partnerships.
* Logistics.
* Accountability.
* Sharing responsibility & communication.
* Creating service experiences that help students meet learning goals.
* Determining next steps.
