Activities scheduled for 2011 International Day of Peace
On Wednesday, September 21st, the UN International Day of Peace will be observed in all 193 countries of the United Nations.
Each year, millions of people join the worldwide observance through participation in a wide range of activities. An annual day of ceasefire & non-violence, Peace Day was given unanimous U.N. adoption in 1981, with a fixed date chosen in 2001. In 2009, the US Senate endorsed active participation in Peace Day.
For the first time in the 30-year history of Peace Day, Philadelphia citizens, organizations & schools across the region will be participating through involvement in a wide range of peace & non-violence activities. The UN theme for 2011 is “Make Your Voice Heard.”
Philadelphians can participate by choosing an activity meaningful for them. Organizations in the Philadelphia region can become involved by planning a Peace activity in keeping with their mission. For Peace Day activities for children and youth, go here.
