2005 Community Mapping Summer Institutes: Part I & Part II

Part I: Understanding Place: Tools and Methods for Community Mapping, June 22 – June 25 Part II: ArcView GIS for Community Mapping, June 27 – July 1

In 2005, the Community Mapping Program (CMP) is offering a 4-day and 5-day institute sequence at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT for community groups and educators working with middle or high school students. The Institute Flyer and Registration is available on-line at http://www.vinsweb.org/education/community_map.html

Part I: Understanding Place: Tools and Methods for Community Mapping
This 4-day introduction to place-based inquiry supports standards-based learning and understanding of local systems for educators and community groups planning a community mapping project. At the heart of the institute is an on-going mini-mapping experience; participants work in small groups to conduct investigations and present results that meet a community need. Themes and skills include: GPS (Global Positioning Systems) data collection and field methods, and historical, digital and print map interpretation.

Part II: ArcView GIS for Community Mapping
Learn to use GIS (Geographic Information System) and GPS as tools for community mapping. During this 5-day institute, participants will become familiar with ArcView GIS through GIS lectures, self-paced tutorials, problem-based exercises using local data, mastery of GPS to GIS integration presentations. Through the support of ESRI, participants will have the opportunity to receive an ArcGIS 9 site license for their K-12 school or library upon completion of a community mapping project.
