2002 West Philadelphia Health, Safety & Wellness Fair

The Friends of Laura Sims Skate House in Cobbs Creek Park, in cooperation with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center, Friends of Cobbs Creek Recreation Center, Mayor’s Office for Health & Fitness, and the Department of Recreation have planned the 2002 West Philadelphia Health, Safety & Wellness Fair…”Festive Celebration of Life. It takes
a Village” to be held Saturday, September 21, 2002 from 10am until 4pm at the Laura Sims Skate House located at 63rd & Walnut Streets.

The purpose is to reach 500 families in the West Philadelphia Community zip codes 19139 and 19143 and address health, safety and wellness issues and concerns. The Health Fair will provide screenings where early detection can impact treatment. They will also provide information on risk factors and healthy lifestyle choices and how they directly impact on prevention. Families will have access to health and medical/pharmaceutical professionals, information tables and exhibitors, safety and law enforcement officers as well as herbalists, diet, nutrition and food preparation specialists. They also plan entertainment for adults and children (face painting; games & prizes; fingerprinting &Y kits with McGruff the Dog)

They are looking for organizations to participate in this event. They are especially looking for support in the following:
>Providing physicians and/or other staff to conduct screenings/tests (blood pressure; cholesterol, diabetes, skin cancer, prostate cancer, prescription drug review; etc)
>Being part of “Ask the Doctor” panel
>Distributing literature and information packets
>Offering a presentation on a specialized area (Asthma, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, Mental Health & Wellness, etc.)
