The Michigan Campus Compact and the Michigan Community Service Commission will hold the 10th Annual Institute on Service-Learning “The Places We Live: Student Engagement in Diverse Communities” February 16-17, 2006 on the host campus of the University of Michigan-Flint. Co-sponsored by Consumers Engergy, Flint Schools/Youth Projects/Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint, WJRT-ABC 12, and the University of Michigan-Flint Offices of Outreach and Graduate Programs, this two day conference will draw more than 300 educators and students from across Michigan and partner states to share ideas and best practices, and explore challenges, related to the successful development and implementation of service-learning. This year’s conference theme will encourage participants to examine service-learning through the lens of place.
Confirmed keynote speakers include: James Conway, Search Institute, A Vision and Plan for an Asset Rich Community Julie Bartsch, Rural School and Community Trust, Service-Learning – An Untapped Option for Revitalizing Rural Communities Josh White, Jr., Vocalist and Activist, Student Voice: Addressing Issues that Matter to You; and Donele Wilkins, Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice, Urban Community Development – Opportunities for Students & Educators.
Conference clinics for higher educators will include: Andy Furco, University of California-Berkeley, Institutionalizing Service-Learning in Higher Education: A Guide to Self Assessment and Jennifer Meeropol, National Campus Compact, Building the Engaged Campus: Using Campus Compact’s Indicators of Engagement to Document and Deepen Civic Engagement.
Conference clinics for K-12 educators will include: Andy Furco, University of California-Berkeley, Dimensions of Assessment in K-12 Service-Learning: Assessing Student Outcomes and the Quality of the Service-Learning Experience; and Kevin Early, Deb Williamson, & Shea Howell, National Conference for Community and Justice, Using Service-Learning to Integrate Diversity Education into Curriculum. Many peer-led workshops, roundtable discussions, and poster/display presentations will also be featured, as well as a student track for those in grades 9-16 interested in being leaders for service-learning. Join us for dinner, entertainment, and a formal award ceremony on the evening of Thursday, February 16th to celebrate service-learning successes and recognize the contributions of educators across the State of Michigan.
