$1,000 Scholarship Opportunity for Philadelphia High School Students
Posted by Philadelphia Youth Action on August 4, 2014
Philadelphia Youth Action, Inc. (YA), a student-led non-profit service organization, in partnership with The Stafford Foundation will select five 2014 Greater Philadelphia based high school graduates who are college freshmen to receive a $1,000 college scholarship from the Ann C. Phillips Scholarship Fund. Youth Action members and supporters established the Ann C. Phillips Scholarship Fund to commemorate the life and legacy of Ann Phillips, a beloved friend and Youth Action Ally who made many personal contributions and offered much professional guidance over the years to the team. Ann Phillips represented a woman who believed in working hard, being considerate of others, socially conscious, and being involved in one’s community. It is the first such scholarship honoring a Youth Action Ally member.
This $5,000 scholarship fund will recognize five students who have demonstrated outstanding academic, leadership, service and extracurricular achievements. Scholarships also recognize financial need, programs of study, and other accomplishments. All scholarship recipients will exemplify the spirit of servant leadership, selflessness, altruism, and pursuit of excellence in their academic endeavors and extracurricular activities. The primary criteria for scholarship selection will be a candidate’s demonstrated leadership performance and potential, as well as a strong commitment to serve in their communities. Candidates are required to be 2014 high school graduates and current freshmen at a degree granting institution, be of good moral character, and exhibit academic achievement by having a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. They also must be attending an accredited, degree-granting two-to-four year college or university, or professional school at the time of application.
“The scholarship fund advances Youth Action’s goal to promote excellence in education while maintaining an unrelenting commitment to serving the community” says Youth Action Senior Advisor, Linda Lewis.
With each scholarship presented, Youth Action will publicly present achievements and seek to encourage further work on the part of the recipients. Thus, Youth Action hopes that this will motivate others to follow their lead in service to their communities. To be considered for this scholarship, interested applicants must apply for the Ann C. Phillips scholarship by Monday, September 8th, 2014 . Scholarship winners will be announced by October 1st. Interested applicants should visit Youth Action’s website to apply for the scholarship at http://www.youthactionteam.org. The scholarship application is featured on the front page of the website. Applicants can also contact Youth Action’s senior advisor Linda Lewis at [email protected] or call 1-888-Youth90 ext. 901 if they should have any questions, comments or concerns.
