										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the past five years, as part of a U.S.Department of Education-funded national project focused on investigating the impacts of community engagement on higher education students’ educational success, we — a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota and the University of Georgia — have been engaged in developing a standardized assessment tool designed to provide a quantitative measure of quality for credit-bearing service-learning courses.  Specifically, the tool — <i>Service-Learning Quality Assessment Tool (SLQAT) — </i> incorporates a set of 28 service-learning practices that research studies have found essential for promoting positive student outcomes.  The tool takes into account these elements to establish a composite numerical score that indicates the “quality” of service-learning courses.</p>
<p>We have shared preliminary versions of this measurement tool with scholars and practitioners at conferences and workshops across the globe for input and feedback.  We now invite you to join us in the second phase of our research focused on assessing the reliability and validity of our tool.  Specifically, we are looking for service-learning scholars, practitioners, and supporters to assign relative weights each of the instrument’s 28 elements by completing a survey in which you will assign each element a score, based on what you believe its level of influence is on student learning outcomes.</p>
<p>The anonymous survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. Your decision whether to participate will not affect your current or future relations with the University of Georgia or the University of Minnesota. There are no benefits (i.e. incentives) to you, or risks expected from participating in the survey.</p>

<p>The Engagement Academy for University Leaders is designed for executives and teams responsible for developing institutional capacity for community engagement. Participants develop institutional plans for engagement and return to their campuses with the ability to advance their plan as well as effectively link community engagement to the teaching, research, and service missions of the institution.</p>
<p>Since its inception in 2008, more than 700 university leaders from around the world have attended the academy. Some institutions send individuals each year to expand the network of leaders on campus in order to continue to enhance and develop their plans for institutionalizing the principles and practices of community engagement. The University of Minnesota&#8217;s Office for Public Engagement has been honored with taking on the role of academy coordinator by the academy&#8217;s founding institution, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.</p>

<p>In the Wingspread Declaration on Renewing the Civic Mission of the American Research University (Boyte &amp; Hollander, 1999), scholars called for American research universities to renew their missions as the agents of democracy and reshape their cultures to better engage students in the work of citizenship. In our edited volume, authors respond to this call by highlighting the ways in which public research universities are undertaking this important work by developing undergraduates’ civic and democratic capacities.</p>
<p>In this volume, authors may address 1) strategies to develop undergraduates’ sense of civic responsibility, engagement in social change, and abilities to work with others across differences; 2) factors predicting undergraduates’ civic and political behaviors; or, 3) outcomes associated with students’ civic and community involvement. We seek chapters that incorporate a variety of data sources to achieve these outcomes.</p>
<p>The editors of this volume are Dr. Krista M. Soria and Dr. Tania D. Mitchell (University of Minnesota). The text will be published by Palgrave Macmillan. Chapters should be no more than 6,000 words and full chapters are due July 30, 2015.</p>
