Join us on September 20, 10 AM to 1 PM, at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia for an inspiring event designed especially for high school and college students, along with their families and teachers.

Many people believe that getting into medical school is unattainable, but our presenters will show you why that’s not true and explain the steps you can take to make it possible. You’ll also learn about the wide range of rewarding careers available as a physician and how you can get started on your own path.

Dr. Joseph Savino, a physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, will share practical advice on how to prepare for and apply to medical school. Dr. Joseph Savino’s career represents a remarkable journey from a young Italian immigrant facing language barriers and economic hardship in Philadelphia to becoming one of the nation’s leading cardiac anesthesiologists and a founding father of intraoperative echocardiography. His four-decade career at Penn Medicine has been marked by groundbreaking innovation in cardiac surgery imaging, transforming patient care through the development and implementation of transesophageal echocardiography.

]]> Out4STEM After-school Internship Program 2025-26 https://phennd.org/update/out4stem-internship-program-2025-26/ Sat, 02 Aug 2025 19:10:01 +0000 https://phennd.org/?post_type=update&p=86309 The Out4STEM program is an after-school internship that aims to provide Philadelphia’s LGBTQIA+ youth and those interested in learning about these topics with healthcare and STEM-oriented instruction, mentorship, academic support, and college/career preparation in an inclusive, safe space.

The program offers Philadelphia high school students the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, as well as healthcare and medicine, and the career opportunities they provide. The program provides a space for cultivating relationships between like-minded, motivated Philadelphia students and professionals.

In addition to providing information about STEM fields and careers, the Out4STEM program fosters a deeper understanding of LGBTQIA+ history. It offers students opportunities to engage with scientists, educators, activists, medical practitioners, and historians who support the community. We will examine the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals in relation to other aspects of their identity, from class to race or religion, and discussions will touch on other civil rights movements.

]]> Hinkson Holloway Mentorship Program – Mar 31 https://phennd.org/update/hinkson-holloway-mentorship-program-mar-31/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 14:44:21 +0000 https://phennd.org/?post_type=update&p=81161 The Hinkson Hollow Mentorship Program is a scholarship program for Black men in the Philadelphia area who are enrolled or going to enroll in a Philadelphia university or college and intend on pursuing medicine as their career choice.

This program is meant to push students through academics, service, and leadership to support these young men in navigating the challenging journey to Medicine. The facilitators of this program will provide mentorship and advising with academic issues, including tutoring, career development, and college/career preparation in a safe, positive, affirming space.

We are currently accepting applications for our 2023-2024 cohort.

The deadline for applications has been extended to March 31, 2023.
