BACKGROUND/CONTEXT

Through Social Mobility Partnerships the Social Innovations Journal aims to evaluate the existing anti-poverty programs in Philadelphia framed within short-term and long-term strategies. The evaluation will conclude with both a mapping of Philadelphia’s anti-poverty ecosystem; social impact individually and collectively; and short-term and long-term strategy recommendations. This edition of the Social Innovations Journal will focus on the Jobs and Education strategy of City Council’s Poverty Action Plan.

For the past 10 years; The Social Innovations Journal has connected and inspired local change agents; through the sharing of knowledge; best practices; and research; to improve poverty. Concrete impact and change requires more than education and engagement. The time has come for The Social Innovations Journal to become a network for collective action; and this short concept paper explains how this evolution will happen.

Happening August 15th, 2PM EDT

This webinar will examine a free, data-rich platform explores housing stability, education, health and well-being, economic security, and mobility in every neighborhood in the country. As social innovators, we are fundamentally in the people business — in the business of changing lives. But the fact is that we can’t do our work if we don’t fully understand the ways in which people are shaped by their surroundings: their home, their neighborhood, their larger community.

As part of Opportunity360: A Collaborative Approach, we will draw on the following three principles: place matters; interconnected problems require interconnected solutions; and residents must be co-creators of solutions to the problems plaguing their communities.

This interactive training will walk multi-sector-minded collaborators through Opportunity360, a comprehensive new approach to understanding and addressing community challenges.

Drawing on more than 200 indicators, Opportunity360 measures whether people in a given place have access to the resources, institutions and services they need to pursue economic security, and how residents fare when it comes to housing, education, economic security, health and well-being, and mobility in every census tract across the country.

The platform enables multi-sector collaborators to assess with a few clicks the assets and challenges in a given neighborhood and to identify and target collaborative, cross-sector investments in solutions.

Opportunity360 is not just an evaluation and measurement tool but a platform to help identify and target solutions, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood, so that together, we can create smarter multi-sector investments and solutions, and stronger communities.

Join us to learn about the methods and model of Union Capital Boston – a rewards program for community and civic engagement that creates physical and digital spaces for building trust and pathways of opportunity.

In this webinar we will:

Identify the key challenges of building social capital and trust in today’s world

Analyze the methods and model of UCB, what has worked and what still needs to be learned and improved

Discuss the future opportunities for new organizing models that seed social capital and weave a stronger community fabric that create opportunities for all

Leading Nonprofits is taught through a combination of theory, practice simulation, and exposure to social sector leadership. Leading Nonprofits provides participants with the essential competencies and tools to conduct in-depth analysis of a non-profit’s effectiveness leading to social impact, financial sustainability, and systems and policy impact. Leading Nonprofits also addresses contemporary challenges related to organizational ethics, accountability, emerging legal frameworks, and public policy. Through the process of designing, incorporating, and governing a best practice mock nonprofit participants will leave with a “best practice” nonprofit manual that includes articles of incorporation, bylaws, governance roles, strategic business plan, dashboard OR scorecard, 3-5 year budget projections, development plan and public policy strategy that can be applied to the governance, leadership, strategic and/or business model, financial sustainability, social impact, marketing and communication, and public policy influence best practices of their own organization.

June 2, 29, & 30; September 22; and October 6

REGISTER BY APRIL 28, 2017 and receive a $300 SCHOLARSHIP provided by EXUDE
TYPE IN CODE: EXUDEEARLY to receive the SCHOLARSHIP

OVERVIEW

During the first two sessions, participants, working in teams will be required to design, incorporate, and govern a best practice mock nonprofit. Using best practice templates, each team will deliver a non-profit infrastructure manual that includes articles of incorporation; bylaws; board member governance committees and roles; strategic business plan (i.e. theory of change); organizational dashboard/scorecard; 3-5 year budget projections; development plan and targets; and a public policy strategy. Through this process participants will learn to lead and/or govern their own organization better through comparing their own leadership/governance models with best practices and through learning from the collective knowledge, experience and conclusions of participating colleagues.

During the third session, participants will determine how the knowledge gained translates into their respective organizations. Participants are encouraged to invited additional organizational members (i.e. board, senior leadership) for the third session to ensure it gains traction within their respective organization. In addition, the third session will introduce the function and role of human resources as a tool to shift an organizational internal culture to best practice models of governance and leadership.

During sessions four and five, participants will apply the knowledge gained and organizational plans to a self-selected experienced non-profit leader in an interview format to learn about his or her organization’s leadership and governance, strategic and/or business model, financial sustainability, social impact goals, marketing and communication plan, and public policy strategy. This step is essential, as it will help consolidate the knowledge, competencies and tools for improved leadership and governance.

The Social Innovations Institute & Lab™ is an intensive sustainable innovation process that includes idea exploration, testing and plan execution to hone entrepreneurship and innovative thinking skills while developing, and eventually executing, new or improved business models.

Through interactive workshops and curriculum modules, participants from a variety of disciplines will imagine, refine, and pursue their own enterprises and innovations to solve social problems. They will learn from experts with real-life experience and research knowledge how to create social sector market opportunities, design new business models, and attract both seed money and sustainable funding from philanthropic and government sources.

Our virtual lab framework provides participants with the tools and knowledge in the form of lectures (concepts) and modules (self-study practice) directly into the hands of social innovators across the globe. The Feedback and Certification options allow for expert and peer feedback on an individual/teams respective development stages of a social enterprise allowing for social idea evolution. Social Innovations Partners provides face-to-face 1-3 Day Social Innovations Labs and 6-8 session Labs over 2-4 months. However, even though face-to-face is the ideal setting to incubate social enterprises, the limitations of geography have demanded a virtual lab framework. By putting the tools and knowledge into the hands of social innovators across the globe we will build the capacity for more SOCIAL innovation changemakers who WILL change the world.
