The Simons Foundation is inviting applications for Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians to stimulate collaboration in the field, primarily through the funding of travel and related expenditures.

The goal of the program, which is an initiative of the foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences division, is to support the “mathematical marketplace” by substantially increasing collaborative contacts between mathematicians. The foundation will make a large number of collaboration grants to accomplished, active researchers in the United States who do not otherwise have access to funding that supports travel and related expenditures.

Each collaboration grant provides $7,000 a year for five years: $5,000 a year for collaboration, travel, and research expenses for the awardee; $1,000 a year in discretionary funds for the awardee’s department; and $1,000 a year in indirect costs to the awardee’s institution. The grant will commence September 1, 2016, and end August 31, 2021.

To be eligible for a grant, an individual must have a Ph.D. and a tenure-track or tenured position, or be a professor emeritus at a U.S. institution of higher education; have a current record of active research and publication in high-quality journals; and not hold any other external grants of more than $3,000 a year that allow for support for travel or related expenditures during the grant award period. There are no citizenship requirements. Individuals at for-profit organizations may not apply.
