JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) seeks a strategic, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader as its next Chancellor and Dean of Penn State Abington.

Penn State is the land-grant research-intensive (R1) university of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania serving over 90,000 students at 24 campuses. Located 15 miles north of Philadelphia’s center city, Penn State Abington is an undergraduate college of Penn State; it enrolls approximately 3,100 students and offers 25 baccalaureate degree programs and two associate degree programs. Students may also complete the first two years of nearly any of Penn State’s 275+ baccalaureate degrees at the campus before moving to another Penn State campus to complete their studies. The campus is organized into three divisions: Arts and Humanities; Science and Engineering; and Social Sciences, Business, and Education. The College’s successful continuing education programs are also valuable to its academic mission and offer corporate learning, off-campus credit education for organizations, and youth programs throughout the year. There are approximately 157 full-time faculty, 166 part-time faculty, and 144 staff and technical service employees. Penn State Abington offers an affordable, accessible, and high-impact education resulting in the success of the most diverse student body of all the Penn State campuses and is committed to student success through innovative approaches to 21st century public higher education within the context of a world-class research university.

Reporting directly to Dr. Margo DelliCarpini, Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses and Executive Chancellor, Penn State Abington’s chancellor and dean serves as the chief executive officer of this student-centered, regional comprehensive institution with responsibility for the quality of academic programs in teaching, research, and service, including the promotion and tenure process; strategic planning; budgeting; philanthropy; faculty and staff development; outreach and alumni engagement; and community and corporate relations. The position requires an individual who can independently provide strategic leadership and management to the Penn State Abington campus while operating as an integral part of the broader Penn State community, working collaboratively with the other chancellors, administrative leadership, and units including the ongoing cultivation of key partnerships including Penn State Global, the Graduate School, and Penn State World Campus. The chancellor is a key executive of the University and serves as a member of the Academic Leadership Council, the Council of Campus Chancellors, and the Advisory Committee for Graduate Education.

The successful candidate will be an experienced and student-centered academic leader with an entrepreneurial outlook who is able to take charge of an effective and thriving campus and serve as a steward of Penn State in the heart of Montgomery, Bucks, and Philadelphia Counties. A minimum of five years of experience in higher education academic administration at a comprehensive institution is required along with responsibility for strategic oversight of personnel, planning, programs, communication, and resources. Candidates should possess a terminal degree from a recognized institution and have a teaching and research record with academic credentials commensurate for an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure. The successful candidate will have a commitment to high-quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, as well as to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Qualified candidates should demonstrate the experience, aptitude, and willingness to lead significant corporate relations and fundraising efforts.

All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in this profile. WittKieffer is assisting Penn State Abington in this search. For fullest consideration, candidate materials should be received by February 26, 2024. Nominations, inquiries, and application materials can be directed to: Jen Meyers Pickard, Ph.D., and Randi Miller at PennStateAbingtonChancellor@wittkieffer.com

The topic of “sustainability” includes a mindset, skills, behaviors, and systems approach that should be considered from every vantage point. What does “sustainability” mean from the perspective of middle and high school science education and, in particular, the science classroom and laboratory? How does the field of materials science play a role in both the broad and narrow implications of sustainability? Since materials science itself is an integrated combination of many traditional disciplines across the physical sciences and engineering fields, it lends itself well to the exploration of sustainability-related concepts, applications, and broader societal impacts.

A colloquium to establish The Consortium for Public Scholars

Call for Abstracts | Due: September 1, 2017

This is a call for abstracts (500 words or less) to share your work in public scholarship at a colloquium held October 12 – 13, 2017 at the Penn State Center Philadelphia. This colloquium is being hosted by several public scholars across institutions in the Philadelphia region, and we are asking you to consider working with us to expand this work to develop The Consortium for Public Scholars. This call is open to university professionals, community professionals, community residents, and advanced high school, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in the Philadelphia region.

Public scholarship refers to knowledge generation and transfer initiatives developed and conducted with and for the public. When engaged in such endeavors, both local and expert knowledge is appreciated and utilized to develop a more nuanced understanding of an issue for public benefit. This paradigm challenges higher education professionals to see their work for the university as embedded parts of external systems in which their skills, knowledge, and resources are insufficient without the skills, knowledge, and resources of local community members. It also requires community professionals and residents to examine their role in their communities, exploring how they can meld their expertise and experience to address public issues. Public scholarship products reflect a critical, discursive, dialogic perspective that tethers knowledge with action; encourages local results with an eye toward broader application; and requires sharing of both knowledge and process in ways that are publicly accessible in terms of language and distribution.

While initiatives exist that bind together individuals who are dedicated to outreach and/or engagement, there are relatively few opportunities for all types of public scholars to collaborate and share knowledge across disciplines, interest areas, and categories of work. This colloquium aims to address this concern by developing a consortium of public scholars across institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, private businesses, and the community in the Philadelphia region. We use the term scholar broadly to include any individual interested in sharing their knowledge of their work in addressing public issues, not only those involved in academia. If this is you, we hope that you will participate. The organizing purpose of this colloquium is to share examples of best practices for public scholarship, and co-develop a path forward for the consortium.

Your abstract should reflect your work and could include:
• Philosophical perspectives on public scholarship/Public scholarship as philosophy
• Political perspectives on public scholarship/Public scholarship as politics
• The practice of public scholarship/Public scholars as civic professionals/ Public scholarship as a way of being
• Public scholarship practice stories from the field
• Public scholarship and societal issues
• Educating public scholars and civic professionals

Abstracts for Presentation Papers should be no more than 500 words; please, no citations. If selected by the organizing committee comprised of public scholars from the Philadelphia region, you will be asked to prepare a paper for sharing with the attendees of the colloquium and a 15 minute presentation on your paper. We aim to develop a published proceedings, therefore your paper should not be previously published material. Papers will be due October 1, 2017.

Students are being asked to participate in a poster sharing session during the colloquium, where you will represent your public scholarship in a visual format on a printed poster. Advanced high school, undergraduate, and graduate and professional students are encouraged to participate. Abstracts for Student Poster Presentations should be no more than 500 words; please, no citations. If selected by the organizing committee comprised of public scholars from the Philadelphia region, you will be asked to prepare a poster for sharing with the attendees of the colloquium. We aim to develop a published proceedings, therefore your paper, abstract, or poster should not be previously published material; your abstract for your poster will be included in the proceedings. Posters should be 36 inches tall by 48 inches wide. Posters will be due by October 1, 2017, and we will have them printed and transported to the Penn State Center. If your poster is not finished by October 1, you will be responsible for printing it and bringing it to the Penn State Center.

Abstracts for papers are due September 1, 2017. Abstracts for student posters are due September 1, 2017. Please submit your abstracts to: consortiumforpublicscholars@gmail.com.

Differential Access to Books and School Librarians in Pennsylvania
Center for Education Evaluation and Policy Analysis Blogs from CEEPA APRIL 12, 2017 ~ DR. ED FULLER

While there is not voluminous evidence about the relationship between access to librarians and student achievement, the extant research does suggest a positive relationship such that students that have access to a school library staffed by a qualified librarian tend to have greater achievement as well as growth in achievement, even after controlling for other factors (Krashen, Lee, & McQuillan, 2012; Lance, & Hofschire, 2012; Lonsdale, 2003; Subramaniam, Ahn, Waugh, Taylor, Druin, Fleischmann, & Walsh, 2015). Moreover, this finding is strongest for students living in poverty since they tend to have less access to books at home and increasingly have less access to books through public libraries (Krashen, 2010; Park & Yau, 2014; Pribesh, Gavigan, & Dickinson, 2011). Further, Constantino (2005) notes that many students in affluent communities have access to more books than students living in poverty have access to through all sources in aggregate. Finally, access to libraries and librarians has also been found to be positively associated with children engaging with literature, developing hobbies, and developing social skills (Jones, 2009). In the study attached below, I examine access to books at home and access to school librarians for Black, Hispanic, and White students in Pennsylvania.

Participate in inquiry-based classroom activities which replicate the science and engineering research practices being conducted by researchers. Renewable Energy is a hot topic today, and this workshop will provide teachers with content knowledge and activities to immediately use in their classrooms. This workshop is a STEM integrated experience, providing resources and skills to help teachers work with their colleagues to implement these concepts into their classroom. Classroom activities are tied to the NGSS and ACT48 credits are provided for $10.00.

Classroom Implementation
Participate in inquiry-based classroom activities which replicate the science and engineering research practices being conducted by the researchers. Topics include: biofuels, biopower, bioproducts, biomass, bioheat, sustainability, and systems thinking. Learn about the research being conducted in the field and how you can conduct your own research in the classroom.

Travel Expenses
Room and board, including travel expenses (up to $500), are provided to each participating teacher. Single rooms are located in the Eastview Terrace complex at Penn State, located close to downtown and near the center of campus. Meals, including group lunches, are also provided.

Classroom materials
Teachers will receive up to $300 worth of classroom materials to use in their classroom. These materials include the BBEP Curriculum, CSATS developed lesson plans, Grasses to Sugars Kit, Race to the Pumps Poster, and more. Transportation to field trip sites is also provided.

On Friday, January 22nd from 5 to 7 p.m, the Penn State Center Engaging Philadelphia will host a screening of the first episode of World on Trial, a PBS film series whose purpose is to elevate public awareness of important human rights issues.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the creator and host of the program, the acclaimed human rights advocate and author Randall Robinson, Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Penn State Law. The event is sponsored by the Penn State School of International Affairs with support from the Global Philadelphia Association.

The event is free and open to the public. Please register for the event to reserve your seat: https://www.sia.psu.edu/events/sia-host-world-trial-screening-and-discussion-philadelphia

The pilot episode of “World on Trial” deals with the 2004 French law banning the conspicuous display of religious symbols in public schools, most notably affecting the right of young Muslim women to wear traditional head scarves or other forms of cover. The program brings together the best legal talent in the world to argue both sides of sharply contested human rights issues before live juries, and asks jurors and viewers to consider whether the law is a violation of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
