Located in southeastern Pennsylvania in the Brandywine Creek Valley, Longwood Gardens is a living expression of everything its founder, Pierre S. du Pont, found inspiring, meaningful, and beautiful. Years before it became a public garden, the land on which Longwood Gardens stands was home to the native Lenni Lenape tribe and Quaker farmers. Since then, the land has undergone significant transformation to become a magnificent property that is enjoyed by more than a million guests annually.

In support of this rich history and tradition, Longwood is inviting applications for its Longwood Fellows Program, a thirteen-month residential educational experience for emerging leaders in the field of horticulture that is designed to help them develop leadership aptitude and skills. Longwood Fellows study topics such as leadership, organizational behavior, communications, board relations, master site planning, HR management, and fundraising. All fellows are expected to complete a departmental immersion at Longwood, are assigned both a mentor and executive coach, attend conferences and lead workshops, and must complete a cohort project and participate in a two-month domestic or international field placement.

The ideal candidate for a fellowship is someone with a bachelor’s degree who wants to serve — or is currently serving — in a leadership capacity in the public horticulture field. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate significant potential for professional growth, be endorsed by other professionals in their field, and be proficient at reading and writing in English.

Nominations by third parties are due by September 30; applications/self-nominations will be accepted until October 31.

To be eligible, applicant must have five or more years of work experience in public horticulture or a closely related field.

Since then, it has undergone significant transformation to become the magnificent property that is enjoyed by more than a million guests each year.

Longwood is now accepting applications and nominations for its 2019–20 Fellows Program — a thirteen-month residential working and learning experience designed to further develop and refine high-potential individuals’ leadership skills. The tuition-free program offers a monthly stipend, housing, pragmatic and individualized leader development opportunities, and immersion into the business of public horticulture as a part of the arts and cultural communities.

Program content is grounded in the disciplines of leadership, organizational behavior, and nonprofit management and begins with an introspective onboarding process that heightens participants’ self-awareness. The program is designed with 25 percent of the focus spent on text and case-based discussions, 35 percent spent on learning from regional and global public horticulture and cultural leaders, and 40 percent spent on pragmatic experiences gained via departmental immersion, a two-month field placement, and a collective cohort project.

The ideal candidate is someone who has a bachelor’s degree and wants to serve — or is currently serving — in a leadership capacity within the public horticulture and/or cultural industry. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate a high potential for professional growth, be readily endorsed by other professionals in their field, be proficient at reading and writing in English, and embody the following characteristics: is committed to professional excellence; demonstrates leadership competencies; has deep intellectual curiosity; is a collaborator; possesses strong communication skills; demonstrates adaptive interpersonal skills; is intrinsically motivated; works for the greater good; represents diverse perspectives and backgrounds; is visionary and innovative; continuously develops oneself and others; demonstrates commitment to public horticulture and the arts and cultural sector; and has five or more years of work experience in public horticulture, arts and culture, or closely related field. Although not required, applicants may possess or be working toward a master’s or doctoral degree.

The 2019–20 Fellows Program begins in June 2019.
