Description: In the past year, political and social changes in our society are providing both challenges and opportunities. With these changes, the field of service-learning and civic/community engagement (SLCE) seems uniquely suited to respond. The question now stands: how do we best address this landscape and ensure that we continue to work towards a more just, equitable, and thriving world? Also, how do we create spaces for difficult conversations, where participants can confront opposing ideas and hold tension in productive and meaningful ways? How do we expand the circle of leadership and empower our colleagues and selves toward civic agency?

The first day of this two-day retreat led by Patti Clayton and Sarah Stanlick will address frameworks, theory, and skills for democratic engagement, dialogue, and empowerment through SLCE. The second day is a facilitated day intended to give space and support to attendees in producing tangible plans, writing, and products they might not have had a chance to complete (or the space to think about them) during the academic year. We will provide technical assistance, brainstorming support, and endless coffee to help you focus and fuel your plans for the 2017-2018 Academic Year ahead (and beyond).

Dr. Patti Clayton, consultant (http://curricularengagement.com/) and Senior Scholar at IUPUI and UNC-Greensboro, will provide workshops and ongoing support throughout the two-day gathering. Dr. Sarah Stanlick, Lehigh University, often works as a co-facilitator and consultant with Patti (e.g. for NC Campus Compact’s professional development workshops, etc.). We seek to have a balance of hands-on workshop time balanced with free time for individuals to make progress on their own work.

Accountabilities:

1. Work with the Director to coordinate, maintain, and establish short and long range planning activities for the Community Service Office

• Collaborate with the Director to develop semester and year long office goals
• Assist with the development of action steps to accomplish office goals in agreement with departmental goals
• Assist with the communication and implementation of the departmental goals to constituencies across campus and in the local community
• Serve as an integral member of the office by attending regular staff meetings, assisting with other office initiatives, and contributing wherever possible
• Demonstrate expertise in the Community Service Office Guiding Principles, Five Critical Elements, the Spectrum of Service and national trends and new knowledge which serves as the foundation for the office programming structure

2. Coordinate Community Service Programs

• Supervise all ongoing Community Service Office programs, including but not limited to: Feel Good Fridays, Parents’ Night Out, Soup Kitchen trips, and Blood Drives
• Supervise one-time flagship programs including, but not limited to Spooktacular and SERVE trips
• Continuously adjust program curriculum, marketing for programs, program scheduling and evaluation for all community service initiatives to best meet the desired student learning outcomes and the overall student life curriculum initiative
• Work with Director to plan and implement staff retreats, training, and other skill building opportunities throughout the year
• Work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and the Office of Student Activities to coordinate meaningful service opportunities from Greek chapters and student clubs/organizations
• Coordinate promotion for, student attendance at, and after experience debriefing for national, regional, and local community service leadership opportunities

3. Assist with campus wide integration of community service efforts

• Work with the Director of Community Service to integrate programming philosophy/structure and resources to a variety of campus constituents
• Aid in the creation of new and innovative community service programs for students at all developmental levels within a variety of populations and groups
• Meet regularly with both professional and student staff members to stay abreast of overarching service initiatives
• Participate in programs and training opportunities, and encourage students to become engaged in programs that integrate a variety of different students from the campus community
• Coordinate and execute in collaboration with the Director any university-wide philanthropy or service opportunities related to natural disasters or other emergencies

4. Advise, support and provide education opportunities for meaningful community service initiatives?

• Advise the Live.Learn.Serve residential communities
• Advise and support volunteers on community engagement initiativesTrain students and staff to effectively design, facilitate, implement and lead community service programs
• Serve as a resource to students, faculty and staff about South Bethlehem/Greater Lehigh Valley community needs and ways to serve
• Supervise Work Study Students
• Provide training, retreats, and other learning opportunities for student leaders to be responsible active citizens

5. Assessment and evaluation

• Evaluate all initiatives using the evaluation processes developed by the Community Service Office; based on evaluation information, make changes to those opportunities as necessary
• In all programming and training, include mechanisms for measuring all learning outcomes
• Implement an assessment plan for the student staff that measures learning and skill development
• Conduct research on “promising practices” resources, programmatic materials, and new initiatives related to community service and engagement
• Seek professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge base, areas of expertise and an understanding of theories and practices
• Collaborates with Director to design, implement, assess, and report learning outcomes for the CSO

6. Serve as an integral member of the larger Dean of Students Office and Student Affairs team

• Serve on Dean of Students Office committees and as a cross-functional team member
• Collaborate with university administration and other offices to facilitate good interoffice working relationships and partnerships
• Provide guidance and serves as a resource to faculty and staff related to Community Service in the general student population
• Participate in a collateral assignment in another functional area as interested and with the approval of direct supervisor

• Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Students to develop semester and year long office goals
• Assist with the development and implementation of action steps to accomplish office goals
• Serve as an integral member of the Office of Student Leadership Development by attending regular staff meetings, assisting with other office initiatives, and contributing wherever possible
• Conceptualize and aid in the creation of new and innovative leadership education programs for students at all developmental levels within a variety of populations and groups
• Build relationships with faculty and staff to find mutually beneficial ways to integrate them into the development and delivery of student leadership efforts and to incorporate their students into student leadership programs and initiatives
• Meet regularly with both professional and student staff members in the Office of Student Leadership Development to stay abreast of overarching leadership initiatives, specifically relating to inclusive leadership

Coordinate student leadership programs

• Gain expertise in Lehigh’s student life curriculum and other guiding leadership theories, particularly as they relate to inclusive leadership and social justice
• Serve as Program Coordinator for the LeaderShape initiative and chair the planning committee; direct the LeaderShape Day 7 program
• Assist in the coordination of the annual student leader retreat
• Assist in the implementation of peer education training and development
• Work with Assistant Directors to plan and implement a variety of leadership retreats, experiential leadership excursions, and other leadership skill building opportunities throughout the year
• Coordinate promotion for, student attendance and hold after experience debriefing for national, regional, and local leadership opportunities
• Direct and organize recognition events, including but not limited to the student leader kickoff and recognition celebration
• Direct the leadership mentor program

Supervision of Ropes Course operations, management, and strategic planning

• Supervise, train, and mentor the ropes course facilitators; coordinate facilitator selection, training, and compensation
• Organize the tracking, assessment, and on-going evaluation of the participant experience on the course and facilitator development
• Oversee the paperwork and policies associated with the risk management and participant safety of the course
• Monitor the operating expenses and revenue generated by the course to ensure a self-supportive small business operation
• Support the Ropes Course lead facilitator and student staff marketing efforts to recruit future facilitators and groups to the course
• Supervision and development of the Office of Student Leadership Development student staff
• Supervise and coach the student staff on project implementation and other office needs
• Organize the hiring, training, scheduling, and payroll for the student staff
• Develop intentional professional development opportunities for the student staff
• Create and implement the logistical structure of the student staff in terms of office hours, timesheets, staff meeting agendas, etc.
• Organize the semester feedback and evaluation process of the student staff
• Train staff to facilitate workshops, seminars, retreats, etc. on various leadership topics

The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Engineering and Technology (PGSE&T) is a two-week summer residential program for talented high school students of science and mathematics. Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and hosted by the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science at Lehigh University, PGSE&T offers an enrichment experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and emphasizes cooperative learning and hands-on laboratory experiences.

The goal of PGSE&T is to encourage young talent to pursue careers in STEM-related fields. The PGSE&T academic program comprises four components:

• Core courses are selected to provide a glimpse into the grand challenges of modern engineering such as energy, healthcare/bioengineering, cybersecurity, transportation/infrastructure, environment/ sustainability, manufacturing/additive manufacturing, personal electronics, 3D printing, nanotechnology, and military technology. These constitute a common educational experience for all PGSE&T students.
• Laboratory courses engage students in hands-on laboratory experiences and provide access to resources and facilities not normally available in high school.
• Team research projects — one for each student — are carried out cooperatively with a team of 5-6 students, under the direction of a faculty advisor.
• Guest lectures by experts in various STEM-related fields will broaden each student’s awareness of the importance of science and engineering to industrial and societal progress.
